eaglestares.blogspot.com The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday re-arraigned an American, Marco Ramirez, at an Ikeja Special Offences Court for allegedly defrauding three Nigerians of $1.2 million on the pretext of securing green cards for them. Ramirez was re-arraigned before Justice Mojisola Dada on an amended 12-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining under false pretence. Ramirez was arraigned alongside his companies – USA Now LLC; Eagle Ford Instalodge Group LP and USA Now Capital Group. The EFCC said that Ramirez committed the offences between February 2013 and August 2013 in Lagos. Ramirez is alleged to have defrauded Ambassador Godson Echejue, Mr Abubakar Umar and Mr Olukayode Sodimu of the money. The offences contravene Section 1 (3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, No. 14 of 2006. The court in a unanimous judgement led by Ibrahim Muhammad held that Mr Umaru, who was elected on the platform of  All Progressives Congress (APC) , was not validly nominated by the party. The court said it was satisfied that the appellant, Mohammed Sani, was the rightful winner of the primary election APC conducted for the senatorial district. The court set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which on April 8 affirmed Mr Umaru as the winner of the Senatorial seat. Consequently, the Supreme Court restored the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which declared Mr Sani as the validly nominated candidate of the APC for the election. Eke allegedly defrauded his victims through a Ponzi scheme by inducing his victims to invest in his Swissgolden packages, through his company, Micheno Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, under the false pretence of paying them 80 percent return on investment within just 40 days. The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a 21-year-old undergraduate of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, Ondo State  gathered that the deceased identified as Daniel Paul Oluwatosin, a 200 level student of the institution’s Philosophy Department, was allegedly killed by suspected cultists during initiation process into “aiye” confraternity. Agitations for restructuring of Nigeria’s political system have been going on for eons without fruition. While the agitations have raged on, there has been no agreement among the Nigerian elites on the “why” and “how” the country should be restructured. Whereas there is a broad consensus among southerners that Nigeria needs to be restructured, the northern compatriots on the other hand are not so crazy about the idea. The demand for restructuring is largely driven by what has been identified as a dysfunctional unitary system of governance that was foisted on the country since the 1966 military incursion into public administration of the country. The system entails the full control of revenues generated from taxes and mineral resources at sub-national levels by the central government, which then allocates proportions of such revenues to the federating units in an inequitable manner.
